Department of Aquaculture and Fishery Microbiology

The Department of Aquaculture and Fishery Microbiology had its inception in 1995 with a postgraduate course to train the local people to cater to the increasing need in the fisheries and allied sectors. It was sanctioned by the Government of Kerala as an initiation to conduct specialised course in selected areas. During 1999-2005, the department conducted an undergraduate vocational course on Industrial Fish and Fisheries assisted by UGC. In 2006 the Department was elevated to the level of a Research Centre under University of Calicut offering PhD programme in Aquaculture and Fisheries. In 2012, UGC sanctioned a M.Sc. programme in Fish Processing and Technology to the department under its Innovative Programme- Courses in Emerging areas. The department also runs a Career Oriented Add-on programme in Commercial Production of Ornamental Fishes. Already 16 batches of postgraduate students have passed out of the department and most of them are well placed in different scientific institutions and processing plants and as teachers in India and abroad.

    Department has collaborative research project with Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Cochin. In association with CIFT, the department completed 4 student projects. The department has research collaboration with school of Marine Biology, School of Industrial Fisheries (CUSAT) and Dept. Aquatic Biology and Fisheries University, Kerala. This has benefited many of the students to join as research scholars and JRFs in CIFT, CMFRI and CUSAT.

  • Research Activities


    The Department of Aquaculture and Fishery Microbiology has been actively involved in research and extension activities in the field of fisheries science since its inception. So far the Department has completed three (3) major and four (4) minor projects. At present it is continuing three (3) minor and one (1) externally funded major project. The linkage of the department to the fisheries related Central (CMFRI, CIFT) State (Fisheries Dept., Matsyafed) and Private institutes and firms in Kerala and other related Universities provide ample scope to the students for higher education and training.

    Three faculties, Dr. M. Razia Beevi, Dr. S. Suresh Kumar and Dr. Ranjeet. K, are recognized research guides of the University of Calicut, while Dr. S. Suresh Kumar is also a research guide of School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

    At present, nine full-time and three part-time research scholars have registered for their Ph. D programme in the department.

    In-house Publication

    A monthly e-newsletter “e-Fish” has been brought out by the Department since August 2009 on news and issues pertaining to present day fisheries.

  • Extension Activities


    Department associated with the NETFISH programme of Marine Products Export Development Authority for their extension programme to educate the fisher folks of Ponnani harbour about Sanitation and Hygiene to be followed during fish catch and processing.

    Dr. S. Suresh Kumar is serving as Member, Task Force of Matsyakeralam project of Fisheries Dept., Govt. of Kerala.

    Department was involved in the designing of laboratory and museum in connection with the development of National Fish Seed Farm, Malampuzha.

    It has been organizing series of aquarium shows individually and in association with Matsyafed in various parts of Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. The mega event Matsya 2010, conducted from 17th to 26th December 2010 is one of these activities.

    The department has been undertaking regular social outreach programmes to create awareness on the need to maintain local hygiene and sanitation among the members of local community.

    Hands on training on value addition of seafood, starting backyard ornamental fish culture units for fisherwomen have been conducted in association with MPEDA and State fisheries department.
