DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

Right from the establishment of the college in 1968, English has been taught as the first language as part of the curriculum of University of Calicut. Department of English focuses on an overall development of students, giving substance to curricular as well as co-curricular activities of students. Teachers in the department are committed to bring out the best in the students instilling in them critical thinking ability, ethical conscientiousness, egalitarian mind-set and emotional maturity. A well equipped digital language lab has been functioning as a part of English Department which aspires to build up the communicative abilities of the students. Department library is also functioning well with an objective to perk up the reading habits of the students. The department is also following innovative teaching methods using audio visual aids. Effective remedial teaching system is also put in practice by the teachers in order to find out the academic deficiencies of the students and to lift up their performance level. BA course in English Language and Literature was introduced in the academic year 2013-14 with an intake of 24 students.

    A documentary festival ‘Pacha’ was organized. A documentary on tribal “The Last Page” was screened and its director Unnikrishnan Avala interacted with students. Another documentary on Kudak dwellers,” Kudakil Ninnum Varthakalonnumilla” was exhibited and its director Shajahan Kaliyath (Asianet) interacted with students on the political significance of the disappearance of natives from Kudaku.

    Organized DAR VOZ (Give Voice) - UGC Sponsored National Seminar on Giving voice to the Silenced: Presentation and Construction of Subaltern in Literature and Media on 28th & 29th January 2016.

    Department of English conducted a series of training sessions, STEP(Students’ Talent Enhancement Programme) for the final year students from all departments.

    Conducted a one day workshop (20/ 06/2013) on the innovative concept, Theme Centered Interaction (TCI), which has been attested as a triumphant and practicable approach in personal development as well as working within group. TCI have accomplished extensive appraisal in Europe and USA for past five decades and is now carrying on its success saga in India also. Using the effective tools of psycho analysis, group therapy and humanistic psychology, TCI is found to make an enduring effect upon the teaching skills and personality traits. Our newly appointed teachers and selected students found this living learning programme quite useful
